This workshop will introduce student to the University of Manitoba’s Respectful Rematriation and Repatriation Ceremony Policy and Wise Practices, which addresses how the University of Manitoba historically acquired and held the remains and cultural belongings of Indigenous peoples without their consent. As a co-chair of the policy development process, I will share insights into how Indigenous Elders and Knowledge Keepers guide this work, which involved ceremony, relationship-building, and community-led decision-making. The policy emphasizes “rematriation”  - a return to the Earth - as a sacred and spiritual process grounded in Indigenous laws and traditions. Through this workshop, students will learn about the importance of acknowledging historical harms, the role of a Canadian university in reconciliation, and how respectful partnerships with Indigenous communities can shape more ethical and responsible research and institutional practices.Students are encouraged to watch The Apology in preparation for the workshop.
